Regional Director of Inpatient Medicine
We are currently accepting applications for an exceptional Board-Certified Critical Care Physician with leadership experience to join our team! The successful candidate should have significant experience and involvement in Hospital administrative activities (e.g., quality improvement, patient satisfaction, productivity, scheduling, etc.) and a productive membership on hospital committees. The Regional ICU Medical Director will work closely with hospital administration and VEP Leadership, in support of VEP’s agenda of high quality, efficient, and compassionate care for all.

Inpatient Medicine Regional Directors for assigned sites will report to the VP of Inpatient Medicine.  This position is as an independent contractor.

  • Financial skills including budgeting and monitoring of data

Objectives for the Regional Director:
  • Each Inpatient contract should be achieving profitability targets
  • Each Inpatient contract should be at or better than VEP productivity averages
  • Each Inpatient contract should be meeting quality goals
  • Foster a positive relationship with the hospital’s admin team
  • Develop the Inpatient Medical Director and others on the leadership team
  • Work collaboratively with the VEP Nursing Director of Quality improvement to optimize operations at each department.

Regional Directors’ Responsibilities and Authority:
  • Access to all performance data for each of their sites, including Power BI, site compensation, VEP quality dashboard and staffing data
  • Any actions that may impact the contract with the hospital needs to discuss with the VP of Inpatient Medicine.
  • To work through the site Medical Directors to achieve the objectives
  • Create an Executive Summary report providing the status of their sites, key initiatives, recent wins, near-term initiatives, meetings with hospital administration, and key concerns. Executive summary will be reviewed monthly with the VP of Inpatient Medicine.
  • Work with the key leaders of each department of VEP to achieve the objectives
  • Responsible for quality at their sites including attainment of targets for all contract incentives and dashboard metrics.
  • Assist in any Company wide presentations/training activities to include Shareholder meetings, Director Academies, hospital site events and other functions deemed necessary by the VP of Inpatient Medicine.
  • Regional Directors will meet with the VP of Inpatient Medicine monthly to report out on the progress at their respective sites. There will be a monthly Regional Team meeting to discuss successes and best practices and discuss action items to improve inpatient operations
  • Meet monthly with the Chief Quality Officer to review the quality performance for their sites.  Each quarter, one of these monthly meetings is the Dashboard Review meeting with the CQO and site Medical Director.
  • Regional Directors have non-clinical responsibilities. They decide how much time is allocated for clinical work. To be a shareholder, Regional Directors are expected to work 250 hours clinically. Clinical work should not interfere with their administrative responsibilities.
  • Regional Directors shall have a maximum of 10 sites. The VEP core administrative team will determine the assigned sites for each Regional Director. This will be determined by geography, challenges at each site and number of new sites.
  • Regional Directors are compensated using a flat amount per site. There will be a performance bonus of 20% as determined on three key categories: Profitability, Quality and Productivity
  • Sites not assigned to a Regional Director shall report to an assigned Corporate VP as determined by the VEP core administrative team. The VP assigned to these sites will be expected to adhere to the same objectives as the Regional Directors.
  • Regional Directors are expected to interview all inpatient medicine candidates for their assigned region and will serve as the corporate interview of the candidate onboarding process.

  • California Medical License
  • DEA License with California registration
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Critical Care/Pulmonary Critical Care
  • Current ACLS certification required (if not Board Certified in Pulmonary Medicine or Critical Care Medicine)


Regional Medical Director Physicians are independent contractors and are given an hourly base rate and a monthly stipend. VEP provides independent contractors with flexible schedules, and paid malpractice insurance with tail coverage.  Physicians also enjoy the benefit of becoming a shareholder after 150 hours worked which allows them to be actively involved in the governance of the company.  Shareholders have the option of participating in VEP's 401(k) plan and short-term & long-term disability plans.
